MCI WorldCom has been selected as a primary vendor to upgrade Delta Air Lines' data communications network by providing ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) and Frame Relay solutions in 28 locations nationwide. MCI WorldCom's technology will help Delta expedite certain automated services involving large amounts of data including passenger check-in and boarding, credit-card verification, baggage management, and communications integration.

Responding to industry demand for high-speed Internet access with expensive new cables or fiber optics, NEC Electronics has introduced an asynchronous digital subscriber line (ADSL) chipset that leverages existing copper telephone wires. Targeted specifically at the small office/home office (SOHO), central office, and residential communities, the chipset will support systems dedicated to delivering high-bandwidth performance as a cost-effective solution.

General Instrument Corp. and Telcordia Technologies, Inc., formerly Bellcore, intend to work together to help customers develop and implement next-generation network IP telephony for cable providers. The two companies will promote open, standards-based telephony architectures for packet-based networks focused on enabling cable operators to deploy cost-effective solutions.
