OPTICAL CONTINUES AT HIGH SPEED

Broadwing Communications (www.broadwing.com) has completed its 18,500-mile all-optical switched network. CEO Rick Ellenberger characterizes the network as offering "bandwidth that is so flexible that it can best be described as `liquid.'" Broadwing also is teaming with storage provider EMC Corp. (www.emc.com) to create optical media centers, part of Broadwing's plans for 11 U.S. Web-hosting centers.... ElectroniCast Corp. (www.electronicast.com) predicts that the dense wavelength division multiplex (DWDM) major component market will increase from $2.85 billion globally in 2000 to more than $10 billion in 2005 and $34.6 billion by 2009.... In another study, Infonetics Research (www.infonetics.com) forecasts that service provider expenditures for metro network equipment will grow 175% from 2000 to 2003, to more than $17 billion.... Insight Research (www.insight-corp.com) cites Internet bandwidth growth as the driver for expected fiber-optic equipment sales growth from $30 billion in 2001 to $70 billion in 2006. "Doom and gloom may pervade North American carrier-supplier discourse," says Insight President Robert Rosenberg, "but we are just not buying it." Neither, apparently, is Alcatel (www.alcatel.com), which announced that Portugal Telecom has selected Alcatel's DWDM solutions for its national optical backbone network.

COLLEGES AND POLICE ONLINE

IT market research and consulting firm IDC (www.id.com) says higher education increasingly will use distance-learning technology to expand its reach. In 2000, about 47% of U. S. colleges offered some form of e-learning program. IDC expects this to increase to 90% by 2004. This represents a 20% compound annual growth rate and $744 million in sales in 2004.... Scotland Yard is taking the e-business route to law enforcement. Also known as the United Kingdom's Metropolitan Police Service, Scotland Yard has selected Kyberpass Corp. (www.kyberpass.com) and Baltimore Technologies (www.baltimore.com) to provide the infrastructure to secure, protect and authenticate access to sensitive information.... On the other side of the globe, the Bank of China (www.bocgroup.com) will use servers from Perle Systems (www.perle.com) to connect its branch offices for sharing of information.... Enterprise spending on streaming video technology will increase from $140 million in 2000 to $2.8 billion in 2005, according to market analyst Jupiter Media Metrix (www.jmm.com). Internal communications will be the primary application.

TECH EXECS AVOID HAND-HELD WEB ACCESS

Venture capital firm ComVentures (www.comventures.com) made an interesting discovery when it surveyed 50 executives in the wireless and communications industries. Turns out that most of those executives are not using their cell phones and personal digital assistants for such tasks as browsing the Web or getting e-mail. Why not? The devices are too slow for those purposes.... Despite the sluggish economy in early 2001, the wireless LAN market is expected to continue its fast growth pattern, according to Cahners In-Stat Group (www.illstat.com). Shipments have continued to increase, with expected sales of $4.6 billion to the enterprise market by 2005.
