PBXs Going places - Carlson Wagonlit Travel/WTS Inc - Company Operations

Communications News,  June, 2001

Carlson Wagonlit Travel's franchise in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, needed to deploy a digital voice solution for its network of three branch offices--without adding a PBX system at each location.

"The issue was, how can we take advantage of the latest technologies without losing the investment and reliability we had from our existing PBX," explains Duncan Macintosh, telecom manager. "We looked for a way to deploy an IP-enabled solution and eliminate our reliance on ISDN lines. We had long been able to link our agents and branch offices on the data end, but wanted to complete the package with a voice solution."

The company chose to integrate two of MCK Communications' EXTender 6000s, specifically designed to support offices with 24 employees or less. MCK's PBXgateway II, a 24-port switch solution that terminates at the EXTender 6000, is a multi-user customer premise device, capable of extending voice services and applications to branch offices or call centers over circuit- and packet-based networks. The PBXgateway II interfaces with the franchise's PBX and all its supported applications, and provides a platform for future software enhancements to support advanced business applications like unified voice messaging and IP recording.

Carlson Wagonlit also increased its staff by more than 50% without adding phones lines, and realized a 20% staff savings through more effective call distribution--all without any significant hardware or network upgrades.
