Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedEducating confused customers - Feedback - Letter to the Editor

To Morris Edwards:
I saw your IP VPN article ("Netcom Update") in the January 2002 issue and thought it was very insightful. One of the main responsibilities for vendors, consultants and editors alike is to help educate a very confused customer population, and your article definitely served that end.
In the next few years, it will be interesting to watch the evolution of premise-based (CPE-based) VPNs, and carrier-based (virtual leased line) VPNs. The work happening on virtual leased lines (involving MPLS, VLAN tagging, and/or Draft Martini) is interesting and definitely has the support of the transport vendors, but most customers still seem to prefer to set up and manage VPNs themselves, on site.
