Communications News, July, 2002
Actually, the two people who rented videoconferencing rooms for the roundtable discussion were one participant who was on the road at the time, but recognized the importance of participating; and the editor of Communications News. All industry participants do have videoconferencing capability in their offices.
Mr. Green is correct about the need for PC on-demand videoconferencing, but that option is years away for most enterprises. Bandwidth considerations and cost justifications will determine how quickly videoconferencing becomes a tool on our desktops.
In the interim, more organizations will be installing conferencing solutions in boardrooms or other meeting rooms for scheduled video meetings, or using services such as the AT&T Executive Videoconferencing Service employed for the Communications News' roundtable. Web conferencing is another viable and increasingly utilized alternative.
While not as convenient as PC on-demand conferencing, these interim solutions still are far less expensive and significantly less hassle than the alternative--having a group of busy executives from different parts of the country (or world) traveling to a single site for a meeting.
