Batter, monitoring - Brief Article

Communications News,  Sept, 2001

ACTIVE MONITORING CAPABILITY is integrated into the battery system to provide high reliability. The Intelligent Monitoring System (IMS) is a standalone system that continuously assesses a battery's ability to provide power to critical applications. Unlike traditional passive monitors, the IMS actively notifies the user when the battery requires service or replacement, and predicts the remaining standby time of a battery during a discharge. The system also uses single-cell voltage impedance testing, in conjunction with string current analysis, to quickly pinpoint a problem. Other physical inputs to the monitor include both individual interconnect voltage and impedance, as well as string voltage and ambient temperature. The IMS measures battery temperature in as many as four locations and uses those measurements to provide a cumulative life prediction. The IMS allows the user to intelligently dispatch field generators and shed unnecessary battery loads to critical sites before power is lost.--GNB Industrial Power
