The Venezuelan government has closed the country`s main Simon Bolivar Maiquetia International Airport to all commercial aviation traffic until mid-January 2000 due to the effects of devastating mud slides.

Traffic that normally operates to the international airport in Caracas will now be diverted to regional airports, including those in Maracaibo, northwestern Venezuela and the island of Margarita off the east coast.

International travellers will be flown to smaller airports closer to the major urban centres by domestic carriers.

Meanwhile, United Airlines has announced that it will be suspending all services to Caracas through 25 December and will waive the normal restrictions for customers with confirmed reservations affected by the cancellations.
