List of suspected non-Y2K-compliant countries released by US

Airline Industry Information, Dec 29, 1999

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

The US government has released a list of countries that it believes may not be prepared for the Year 2000 changeover period.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said though, that the lack of preparation, which was mostly attributable to a failure to tackle the issue in time, did not necessarily pose a threat to safety. A statement issued by the FAA said `to date, our analysis has not identified any aircraft safety problem associated with the year 2000 which would justify prohibition of aircraft from US airspace.`

The countries listed as being `slow-starters` included Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Colombia, El Salvador, Fiji, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, St. Kitts West Indies, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay. While Cape Verde, Guyana, Haiti, Marshall Islands, Paraguay, Poland, Russia, Samoa, Senegal and Venezuela were listed as questionable because they failed to provide sufficient information.

Meanwhile, domestic carriers in the USA, which represent 95% of domestic air travel, have fared well, with the nation`s top ten airlines all receiving FAA approval.
