The US National Mediation Board (NMB) has refused a request from US Airways flight attendants to declare their negotiations with the airline as an impasse and has instead ordered them back to the negotiating table.

The Association of Flight Attendants, which represents the employees, has agreed to follow the order and mediated contract negotiations will continue during the week commencing 13 December.

The decision by the NMB has averted the possibility of strike action occurring during the holiday season, but the union has not ruled out the possibility of strike action in 2000 if the dispute remains unresolved into the New Year.
