Thai investigators rule out bad weather and airport facilities in recent Qantas accident

Airline Industry Information, Nov 18, 1999

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C) 1997-9 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Investigators from Thailand looking into an incident on 23 September in which a Qantas Airways aircraft overshot a runway in Bangkok, have discounted poor weather conditions or airport facilities as possible causes. Thai investigators now believe pilot error and/or mechanical problems were to blame, but the inquiry has now been turned over to the Australian Bureau of Air Safety Investigation (BASI). Meanwhile, the CEO of Qantas has said he was disappointed that it had taken more than six weeks for the airline to be able to access the flight data records and was still assessing the data so could not comment on the conclusions reached by Thai investigators.
