An independent investigative board appointed by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has cleared six pilots and two civilians of involvement in a licensing scam.

The CAA stated yesterday (16 August) that the board had found no evidence to suggest that the eight people accused were involved in an aviation permit syndicate, but that they still faced criminal charges arising from their arrest in June.

The eight people were arrested after South African police claimed that they were involved in the issuing of fraudulent pilot permits and leaking licence examination papers according to Reuters.

The panel also noted that it does not believe that South Africa is being flooded with suspect flying permits and that the skies 'are safe.'
