The International Transport Association has filed a request with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department on behalf of some 60 airlines seeking an increase in airfares.
The airlines are apparently requesting an increase of about 3% due to rising fuel prices. A decision is expected soon.
A spokesperson for the Travel Industry Council has stated that the increase would mainly affect tickets bought directly from airlines, with those purchased through travel agents usually influenced by market demand according to the South China Morning Post.
Several airlines have already been granted individual requests for a fare increase, including Cathay Pacific Airways, Dragonair and British Airways. These carriers would not receive a further increase under the application.
