The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) proposed a USD172,500 civil penalty against Chautauqua Airlines Inc on 1 December.

The FAA claims that the carrier failed to conduct pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing for safety-sensitive employees. The fine relates to inspections conducted by the FAA in October 1997 and August to September 1998, as well as a 1996 incident in which the carrier failed to conduct random alcohol and drug testing on 25% of all its 280 employees.

Chautauqua has 30 days from receipt of the FAA notice to submit a reply to the agency.
