British Airways' CEO to head Internet travel agency web portal formation

British Airways' CEO Bob Ayling has confirmed that the carrier will be heading a group of European airlines involved in the formation of a new Internet travel agency portal.
Ayling said at the airline's annual investor day that British Airways was currently in discussions with about ten other carriers, including Air France, Alitalia, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, SAS and Swissair about the project.
He also indicated that talks were in a very advanced stage and that a launch could be announced shortly according to Reuters.
Ayling also detailed other components and plans for the carrier's GBP100m investment in online ventures, including a lifestyle portal that will be a spin-off of its Air Miles loyalty programme, increased emphasis on Internet sales with the aim of selling 50% of tickets online in three years and the formation of a new e-commerce unit.
