A lapse in security has apparently left some Northwest Airlines customers at risk of Internet fraud after the carrier`s Internet site was left unsecured.

Customers using the site around mid-December 1999 have apparently been contacted by the airline after one customer noticed that the lock icon did not appear when he placed an order over the Internet. Northwest Airlines has said that the problem occurred when a computer programmer performing maintenance work on the site forgot to restore the security system.

The airline says that the risk of hackers obtaining customers` information is small but that the company is treating the incident seriously. The exact length of time the site was left unsecured or the number of customers affected has not been disclosed.
