Vietnam Airlines will purchase five aircraft between now and 2003 at a cost of US$500m, according to the carrier's general director Dao Manh Nhuong.

No details on exact size or manufacturer were given, but he said the purchase would include three large and two smaller aircraft. About 15% of the financing will come from retained reserves and preferential loans from the state, while the remaining 85% is likely to come in the form of export credit schemes. The majority of Vietnam Airlines' current passenger fleet consists of leased aircraft, but Nhuong told the Saigon Economic Times that the company hoped to own 80% of its fleet in the future.
