There have been concerns raised that a new USD21m air traffic control tower at Miami International Airport has a design flaw.

The tower is being built by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which maintains that there is no problem with the tower, but air traffic controllers (ATCs) apparently disagree and are threatening to boycott the building when it opens in 2001.

A spokesperson from the Air Traffic Union (ATU) said that the workers would not `accept the tower in its current configuration,` because one of the four large columns that support the hurricane-proof roof apparently blocks ATC`s view of a critical area of the field.

A spokesperson for the FAA said that the design team is currently working with the ATU but would not consider tearing the building down as an option.
