The San Francisco International Airport is hoping to alleviate environmentalists` concerns about the ecological impact of its new offshore runway proposals by launching an international design competition on 18 January.

The airport commission is offering USD250,000 each to up to six firms that produce innovative designs for the offshore runway into San Francisco Bay after being criticised for not considering enough alternatives for the runway.

Finalists will be selected on 9 February and to receive the USD250,000 payment the firms must present a detailed plan by 20 June 2000.
