Jane Garvey, the chief administrator of the US Federal Aviation Administration, has announced that there will be a 12-month environmental impact study into a new runway proposed at Boston`s Logan Airport.

The 5000-foot runway has been heavily criticised by the Mayor of Boston, neighbours to the airport and other interested parties concerned about noise and pollution emanating from the airport, but has also received support from those who think the facility is too congested, with flight delays sometimes reaching up to five hours according to The Massachusetts port Authority.

The FAA will now prepare a `supplemental draft environmental impact statement` and has requested that the Governor of Menino and Massachusetts appoint three representatives to help with the process.
