After an estimated 2,000 passengers have been found to have illegally entered the Netherlands on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flights, the Dutch carrier has agreed with the government to increase passport controls.

The three-year plan was developed by the Immigration and Naturalization Service and is to be implemented from 1 April.

KLM has stated that the new programme is not intended to stop illegal immigration, but is aimed at reducing costs, with the carrier being fined NLG3.2m in 1998 for bringing passengers into the Netherlands with invalid travel documents.
