Formal negotiations between Britain and the USA regarding the liberalisation of air travel between the two countries are due to recommence on 12 June after being suspended in January.

US Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater has indicated that he is hoping to have a deal in place by the end of this year and is seeking not only increased access for US carriers at London-Heathrow Airport but also an increase in the number of flights operated between Britain and the USA by carriers from both countries.

Slater also indicated to Reuters that the recently announced merger between United Airlines and US Airways would probably factor into the negotiations since US Airways has always been quite vocal about lobbying for more trans-Atlantic flights.

Under the current Bermuda II treaty signed in 1977 airlines from Britain and the USA are each limited to 21 daily flights between the countries.
