The general manager for BAE Systems Plc, a British aerospace company, has forecast that the demand for regional jet aircraft in China will grow in line with the demand for larger aircraft.

Christopher Wright indicated during an interview with Reuters that China's desire to develop the nation's western hinterland would drive demand for regional jet aircraft, and particularly for BAE Systems' 70- to 100-seat RJX model, which he believes is ideal for the region.

Supporting Wright's theory perhaps is recent news that Embraer of Brazil has signed a letter of intent with Sichuan Airlines for the sale of five, 50-seat, ERJ-145 aircraft.

Chinese airlines currently operate some 13 of BAE Systems' older BAe-146 aircraft so the company is hoping to increase that with its new RJX model.
