Following the recent announcement that UAL Corp has proposed to acquire US Airways Group, American Airlines' parent company, AMR Corp, has apparently been discussing a merger with Northwest Airlines Corp.

There have been no official comments on the talks, which were reported by KSTP-TV on the evening of 1 June, however the television station indicated that the talks were in a preliminary stage. KSTP-TV has not identified its sources.

Analysts have suggested that the United Airlines/US Airways merger would place pressure on American Airlines, the world's number two carrier after United Airlines, so a possible merger by that carrier with another large American airline is not unexpected.
