Russian manufacturer starts production of new aircraft - Brief Article

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Aviakor, a Russian aircraft manufacturer based in Samara, has commenced the production of five turbo-prop Antonov AN-140 passenger aircraft, with the first expected to be rolled out by the end of 2000 and the remainder during the first half of 2001.

Russian carrier, Aeroflot, has apparently placed orders for 50 of the aircraft, while Yakutia airline has ordered ten and Samara airlines five.

The aircraft have a production cost of about USD8.5m and are believed to be the cheapest medium-range aircraft in the world according to Reuters.
