Contract negotiations between Air Canada and its pilots represented by the Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA) broke down on 7 June after the union rejected the carrier's final offer on a new wage pact.

Outstanding issues apparently include wages, pensions, crew complements for long-haul flights and the scope of flying to be conducted by pilots.

The pilots have not yet taken a vote on strike action, but it is possible that such action could occur from 15 June onwards. The ACPA has indicated to Reuters that it will be canvassing the possibility of a strike with members next week.

A spokesperson for Air Canada has stated that the carrier would not be locking pilots out and was ready to recommence talks whenever the union is ready.

Air Canada's pilots have been without a contract since 1 April.
