KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) has apparently asked for a 30% shareholding in the merger currently being negotiated with British Airways (BA).

Industry observers say that KLM is unlikely to be given such a large stake, with BA more likely to offer 15% according to the Financial Times.

The speculation is based on average market values for the year, with BA capitalised at GBP3.61bn and KLM at GBP630m according to Dow Jones News.

BA's offer to KLM is not expected to be based solely on the market value, but will also take into account any opportunities and advantages that the Dutch carrier offers, such as through its route network and alliances with other carriers.
