Continental Airlines has agreed to pay a fine of USD50,000 to settle charges of discrimination against disabled passengers.

The charges were filed by the US Department of Transportation in August 1999 following a series of complaints that wheelchair-dependent passengers had not been given adequate assistance or had been left for long periods on board aircraft or in the airport terminal.

A Continental spokesman said the airline maintained that there was no pattern of discrimination but had agreed to settle the case in order to avoid pursuing costly litigation.
