Airbus Industrie has said it expects to beat fierce rival Boeing in the race to win aircraft sales in the growing Latin American market.

Claiming to have the 'edge' in new commercial aircraft sales in the region, the European consortium currently has 109 firm orders over the next five years. A senior Airbus executive told Reuters this week that if one excludes 707s and DC3s, over the last 12 years Airbus had won 78% of new aircraft orders in Latin America compared with just 14% for Boeing and 8% for McDonnell Douglas.

Earlier this week Boeing announced the creation of a new sales force to defend its position in the Latin American region.
