Senior transport officials representing the Britain and the United States are due to meet today (30 March) in a bid to re-open the failed open skies negotiations according to the Guardian newspaper.

The long-running talks ended without progress in January this year and Reuters notes that even discussions on the subject between the British Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President Bill Clinton have 'failed to bring negotiators back to the table'.

The key disagreement throughout the negotiations concerns access to London's Heathrow Airport and the two sides have consistently failed to find a compromise on the subject.

A spokesman for the British government was unable to confirm whether fresh negotiations were underway, but the Guardian quoted an unnamed source who claimed today's meeting would be for 'informal talks about talks' to set the ground rules for any future deal.
