China's commercial airlines can expect increased losses on US routes when carriers in the US doubles the frequency of its flights over the next year, government researcher Zhang Wenkui said recently.

China's domestic carriers will face competition when the number of transpacific flights increases from 27 to 54 in 2001.

Zhang told the Beijing Morning Post that China should consider merging some of its nine domestic carriers to enable them to face the threat from foreign competition.
