Volvo Aero is to take part in an EU project to develop more cost efficient, more advanced and more environmentally-friendly aircraft engines.

The EU Commission has now given its approval for the four year Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Aero Engine (EEFAE) project with a budget of EUR100m which, along with Volvo Aero, involves several other companies including Rolls Royce, MTU, Snecma, Fiat and ITP.

The aims of the project are to reduce engine costs by 30% partly through the reduction in fuel consumption and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and nitrogen dioxide emissions by 80%.

Volvo Aero's role in EEFAE will be to further develop and lower the costs for a low-pressure turbine case and a rear turbine case in the engine, to expand its expertise in the field of high temperature materials and to develop simulation techniques for manufacturing.
