The man who hijacked a Qatar Airways flight and forced it to land in Saudi Arabia has received a prison sentence of five years.

Adel Fahd Jahid, 23, hijacked the aircraft as he was being deported from Qatar to Jordan on 15 September and claims that his action was designed to highlight the situation of the Iraqi people's suffering under United Nations sanctions imposed in 1990. Jahid had used a knife during the incident but surrendered once the aircraft had landed in Saudi Arabia. He had apparently feared that Jordan would deport him to Iraq.

His lawyer has indicated that although the sentence is quite lenient 'given the severity of the crime' he still intended to appeal in order to reduce the sentence even further, according to The Associated Press.
