Two unnamed airlines have reportedly shown an interest in operating the route between Umea, Sweden and Vaasa, Finland after the Finnish ferry operator Silja Line announced its intention to end its services on the route.

One of the airlines, based in Turku, Finland, has said that it would like to operate the route twice daily with propeller aircraft according to Vasabladet, a Finnish regional newspaper.

Swedish local authorities had expressed concern that Finns who work and study in Sweden would quit their jobs if they were unable to commute across, and an air route between the cities would offer a new option for such commuters.
