An independent union formed by American Airlines` pilots in 1963 is apparently considering membership of the larger Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).

The Allied Pilots Association passed a resolution on 29 September during a special board meeting to form a committee to investigate the benefits of joining ALPA. The latter represents some 58,000 pilots at 50 airlines in the USA and Canada.

American Airlines` pilots originally joined ALPA in 1933 but formed their own union after disagreements with the union`s national leadership according to The Dallas Morning News.

The resolution comes about a week after American Airlines` pilots rejected a one-year contract extension.
