A report issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has revealed that flight delays increased during August after a drop in July.

The FAA recorded 47,893 delayed flights for August, which was up from July`s 44,430 but below the 50,114 recorded for June. The number was also up from the 37,189 reported for August 1999. The total number of flights recorded for August was 11,911,621.

Poor weather conditions contributed to the high number of delays, with 33,339 attributed to weather. Other factors included congestion, with flights delayed due to volume up from 3,376 in August 1999 to 5,397 this year.

There were 5,745 delays reported in the 'other' or miscellaneous category, which was up from 3,365 reported for July 2000. The FAA has indicated that many of these were due to restrictions on the use of `land and hold short` procedures at some major US airports.

Other delays were due to equipment problems (452) and runways (2,960).
