The United Airlines branch of the Association of Flight Attendants has requested a meeting with the airline`s top executives this week to discuss a new wage increase.

A spokesperson for the flight attendants` unions stated that the attendants were seeking wage improvements `given that the pilots just got a huge raise` according to the Associated Press. The flight attendants reached a ten-year contract in 1997 and intend to discuss this at the meeting to be held this week, but have not indicated what amount they are seeking.

United Airlines` pilots recently received an immediate pay rise of between 21.5% to 28.5% followed by four annual increases of 4%.

The flight attendants have also indicated that they are angry about alleged abuses and contract violations by the airline, including frequent work schedule changes, failure to assign hotels or assignment to drug-infested, unsafe hotels, forcing flight attendants to sleep on aircraft or in crew lounges on layovers and other problems. The attendants have been picketing at major airports in the USA and overseas about the issues.

In other news, the United Airlines flight attendants have indicated that they will make a major announcement about the proposed merger between United Airlines and US Airways on 26 September.
