Egypt is planning to build 20 new airports across the country over the next 30 years, according to the Egyptian Minister of Transport, Communications and Civil Aviation Ibrahim el-Demiri. The minister said that the process will help promote national development and create more job opportunities, Xinhua News Agency reported.

AirTran Airways, a US carrier, has exercised options on two Boeing 717 narrow-body aircraft, taking its 717 fleet to 30 aircraft. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2001 according to Reuters. AirTran's entire fleet is rented from Boeing under long-term operating leases of about 18 years, an AirTran spokesman said.

Japan has agreed to extend about JPY51bn in loans to help China build an international airport and a synthetic fibre plant. JPY43.8bn will go towards constructing an international airport near Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, which is scheduled to open in 2003.
