'Bumping' compensation may rise

Airline Industry Information, April 18, 2001

The US government is considering forcing airlines to pay more for 'bumping' passengers from oversold flights.

Under federal rules introduced in 1978, if passengers are involuntarily 'bumped' from their flight they are entitled to USD200 in compensation (or USD400 if they will be delayed more than two hours) and a free flight to their destination.

Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta has said that his department is currently looking at the regulations that tell airlines how much they must pay.
