ATA reports US aviation figures for March

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

The Air Transport Association (ATA), an industry group representing airlines in the US market, has reported that revenue passenger miles (RPM) increased by 0.7% on average for March 2001.

According to the ATA's figures, passenger enplanements decreased by 1.2% compared to March 2000, domestic revenue passenger miles decreased by 0.9% and international RPMs increased by 5.1%. One RPM is one fare-paying passenger transported one mile. In other results, the domestic load factor was 73.3% and the international load was 76.8%. Load factor is the percentage of seating that is utilised.

Speaking about the latest figures, the ATA's chief economist David A Sweirenga said, 'Demand for air travel clearly softened with the weakened US economy.'
