JFK's Saarinen terminal to be demolished

A terminal for now-bankrupt carrier Trans World Airlines at New York's JFK Airport has apparently been slated for demolition.

The futuristic terminal, built in the early 1960s by architect Eero Saarinen, will be scrapped and replaced by a larger facility that can handle more passengers and larger aircraft according to The Associated Press.

Further, United Airlines is investing about USD350m to build a new terminal alongside the TWA terminal that is scheduled for completion in 2005. It is expected that two arching tubes that connect the Saarinen building with the new United Airlines terminal will be saved.

At least one of the Saarinen 'pod' waiting areas will be demolished however because its is 'totally undersized and not equipped to handle modern jets or customers' according to a spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport.
