The US Department of Transportation (DOT) released the latest monthly Air Travel Consumer Report on 4 December.

The report for October shows the USA`s 12 major carriers reporting their best on-time performance in more than four years. The 12 reporting carriers posted an 84.8% on-time arrival record for October 2001, compared to 76.2% in October 2000. The best on-time performance record of 85% was posted in September 1997. The DOT says that the on-time arrival performance was helped by a reduction in flight frequencies.

Delta Air Lines had the best on-time arrival rate in October at 90.1%, followed by Continental Airlines at 88.7% and Southwest Airlines at 86.6%. Alaska Airlines had the lowest percentage of on-time flights at 76.4%, with Aloha Airlines ranked eleventh at 79.9% and American Airlines at 80.0%.

The consumer report also includes data on the number of domestic flights cancelled by the 12 reporting carriers. In October, the carriers cancelled 1.5% of their scheduled domestic flights, down from the 2.1% cancellation rate of October 2000. American Eagle Airlines had the highest percentage of cancelled flights with 6.6%, followed by Aloha with 1.9% and Northwest Airlines with 1.6%. United Airlines had the lowest rate of cancelled flights at 0.7%, with Continental ranked second-best, also at 0.7%.
