Air Canada said on 3 December that it had reached a tentative agreement with the Air Canada Pilots` Association on workplace programmes that eliminate the need to proceed with previously announced pilot furloughs.

The programmes include mandatory worksharing, voluntary block time reductions and a special retirement incentive severance plan, and will result in significant savings in labour costs.

The agreement, subject to ratification by the union membership, comes into effect 1 January 2002 for a one-year period and may be extended by a further six months.
