The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is to spend between USD4-5m on correcting design flaws in the newly-constructed control tower at Miami International Airport.

The work will involve dismantling the top two floors of the control tower in order to take out four thick columns that were obstructing air traffic controllers' field of vision. The columns will be replaced with narrow window supports and the roof will be strengthened due to concerns about damage from hurricanes, according to UPI.

A spokesperson for the Air Traffic Controllers Association has welcomed the news, but expressed disappointment that the group's view had not been heeded four years ago when concerns about the new tower's design were first raised.

The rebuilding should be completed in October and the tower operational in late 2002.
