British Airways may ban cockpit visits

Following a recent incident in which an enraged passenger burst into the cockpit of a British Airways flight to Kenya, almost causing the aircraft to crash, BA has indicated that it is considering banning visits to the cockpit, most of which involve children.

The move to ban or reduce passenger access to the cockpit is apparently also being considered by several other airlines according to The Times.

American Airlines has stated that it does not permit cockpit visits and most US airlines keep the cockpit door locked at all times during flight, except when access is required by crew members. British Airways has a policy of only locking its cockpit doors during takeoff and landing.

A spokesperson for British Airways stated that it would regret having to place a full ban on cockpit visits, adding that many of its pilots had been inspired to the occupation by such visits. The carrier also indicated that such visits can help to relieve nervous flyers.

British Airways is also examining its procedures for dealing with unruly passengers.
