The CEOs of the USA's major airlines, and the head of the Air Transport Association (ATA), an industry trade group, met with House of Representatives Aviation Chairman John Mica on 8 June to reaffirm the airline industry's commitment to improved customer services.

ATA CEO Carol Hallet stated, 'Second only to safety, ensuring quality customer service is our highest priority. We must continue to educate the public on the challenges confronting the future of air travel as well as the steps we are taking to improve the flying experience.'

The airlines will report on their voluntary customer service programme progress on 20 June. The airlines indicated that their programmes have already made a difference, with the Department of Transportation reporting that customer complaints were down 12.5% for the first four months of 2001.
