The US Equal Opportunity Commission has filed a lawsuit against Northwest Airlines, accusing the carrier of bias because it did not hire a qualified disabled applicant for an aircraft-cleaning position.

The lawsuit was filed in a US District Court on Friday (1 June) on behalf of Cynthia Jones, who is legally blind in one eye. Jones, who applied for the airline job in April 1999, failed to meet the carrier's requirement for 20/20 vision in both eyes with glasses or contact lenses. The lawsuit is seeking back pay for Jones from the time she applied, unspecified punitive and compensatory damages and a court order that bars Northwest Airlines from discriminatory employment practices.

Northwest Airlines has stated that it 'highly motivated and committed to hire and retain qualified individuals and is fully aware of the requirements' of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The carrier also indicated that it had not yet seen the lawsuit.
