The Boeing Company, a US aerospace company, unveiled a proposal for changing the US air traffic control system on Wednesday (6 June).
Under its plan, Boeing intends to integrate air traffic management (ATM) tasks throughout the US National Airspace System. This will include all participants in ATM having access to the same data for improved collaboration, negotiation and strategic planning; a precise depiction of aircraft location and prediction of an aircraft's future position to enable more efficient operations; and air traffic controllers will have more powerful tools and better data to safely manage traffic in larger sectors.
The system will be enhanced by advanced satellites providing communications, navigation and surveillance services. Boeing said in a statement that its concepts will integrate with modernisation plans proposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and that the improvements will create capacity for more than 15 years of traffic growth, which is equivalent to a 45% reduction in delays. Boeing also indicated that if 'new runways and improved airport infrastructure are added to what is already planned, the envisioned system will accommodate air traffic growth for the next 25 years, with no increase in delays.'
Additional information about Boeing's concepts can be found at http://www.boeing.com/atm.
