The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Lockheed Martin Corp a contract for the installation of a new Advanced Technologies and Oceanic Procedures (ATOP) system at three US air traffic control centres.

The contract is reportedly worth about USD200m, although FAA officials have said the contract value could change. The FAA has also stated that the contract will help Lockheed Martin Corp to sell the system to other countries with oceanic responsibilities, such as the UK.

ATOP is designed to eliminate the current paper-based system of tracking aircraft as they cross the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans. The system will also provide danger alerts for aircraft flying to close to each other and display the aircraft on location screens, according to The Associated Press.

The new equipment will be installed at the FAA oceanic centres in Oakland, California, New York and Anchorage.
