A Ukraine-made aircraft believed to be the largest in the world made its first test flight on 7 May.

The An-225 Mriya took off from an airfield near Kiev and remained in flight for about 30 minutes according to The Associated Press.

The aircraft has six engines and a wingspan of 291 feet, and is capable of transporting 275 tonnes of cargo 2,800 miles. The aircraft was originally designed to carry the former Soviet Union's Buran space shuttle and was grounded after that project was cancelled.

The An-225 is a joint project between the Antonov aviation design bureau, which is based in Kiev, and Motor-Sych, another Ukraine company.
