A long-running dispute over aircraft noise between the European Union and the USA has been resolved through a new political agreement.

Belgium, the current president of the EU, indicated that a row over how to classify older aircraft fitted with 'hushkits' (or noise mufflers) was reached during a meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) last week.

A spokesperson for the EU also stated, "There are no winners or losers... There is a deal in which every party will obtain something."

The agreement means that the EU will withdraw its hushkit regulation before 2002 and the US will withdraw a complaint filed against the EU with the ICAO. The agreement was made possible after the ICAO introduced a new, tougher standard for aircraft noise, called the Chapter IV standard, which will apply to new aircraft from 2006. The EU's current noise regulation law will be replaced with a new regulation that is in line with the ICAO standard.
